The Wonder of Leuven – Belgium

Leuven - Belgium - July 2018 L

Sat in the silent courtyard of the Martin’s Klooster Hotel at lunchtime under a cloudless sky sipping a Bailey’s over ice whilst nibbling on fresh strawberries bought from the Saturday market just an hour ago in the centre of Leuven. And what a place this is. Little prepares you for the breathtaking beauty of the city centre which is dominated by open squares flanked by the most stunning array of churches, town halls and houses many of which date back to the fifteen century. The architecture is truly amazing as is the chilled out Summer atmosphere inspired by both the weather and numerous events taking place in and around the city. It’s only Zia few hours until we head to the TW Classic Festival in nearby Werchter featuring an iconic line up with Kraftwerk, The National and Editors; it promises to be the day of days and the thrill o0f the past 48 hours only adds to my sense of anticipation. Whilst Donald Trump plays politics with Theresa May in London and Britain drones on in its Brexit muddle, I question why on earth the rest of the EU even want is involved in the first place. When you hop over to places like this, squabbling over trade deals seem of no consequence and it is clear that wider Europe has moved on and doesn’t give a flying fuck if the UK is part of the plan or not. So, the UK wants to leave Europe, well I would happily leave the UK and live in places like Leuven – it really does have it all…
